HOW TO IDENTIFY REAL AND FAKE ROSE WATER?
Most Rose Waters available in the market has essential oils or fragrance or chemicals added to them which gives a really intricate or sweet fragrance. Take a closer look at the labels to understand what goes into the making.
Steam Distilled ; Fresh roses are steam distilled to make natural pure rose water
Fragrance should never be overpowering or too sweet. Rose Hydrosol or Rose Water is made traditionally using the steam distillation method, you will not find its natural aroma to be as sweet as chemical rose waters. The end product of our traditional steam distillation is Rosewater in its purest form with all properties. We don’t further add any essential oil/fragrance to enhance it’s natural aroma. The fragrance will be very subtle yet elegant aroma of roses.
If you shake your Rose Water bottle, It shouldn’t foam or appear as a film like soap like foam; Please note, if you rigorously shake any liquid, it appears bubble like. If you want to double check that your Rose hydrosol is real and does not contain solubilisers, make sure you shake the bottle well. Solubilisers are surfactants and will foam and appear like a soap like foam which doesn’t disappear after several minutes too post shaking the solution.
It shouldn’t irritate eyes: Pure rose water will never irritate your eyes too. You can spray it directly in your eyes for a soothing effect to tired eyes. According to Ayurvedic texts, it helps balance the ‘Sadhaka Pitta’ that governs our emotions. Apart from this, Rose is considered a ‘tridoshic‘ flower, as it can balance Vata, Kapha, and Pitta doshas.
HOW IS SHESHA AYURVEDA ROSE WATER MANUFACTURED
The process of rose water preparation is simple involving least ingredients. Fresh rose petals are cleaned and distilled with steam. Shesha Ayurveda’s Rosewater is produced from fresh Damask roses of Kannauj (the ancient distillery city of India). The process of steam distillation for rosewater preparation is called deg-bhapka.
Local Artisans of Kannauj, rise early to pick the rose petals and the petals are sent to the distilleries the same day. Careful selection of good quality petals manually takes place as the first step of rosewater preparationThe rose petals are added into large copper vessels called deg along with a little cold water. This is heated, allowing the distilled water to convert to steam. As the steam passes through the rose petals, it slowly releases its scent. This steam then passes through copper pipes to a sealed container and continuously cooled with cold water. The vapor is condensed due to cold water and is collected in another container called bhapka.
The rosewater collected is then transferred and undergoes UV filtration to remove microbes, making it suitable for use. The entire process of Shesha Ayurveda’s rosewater preparation is carried out at the local artisan facility in Kannauj. The deg is closely monitored by artisans skilled in the work to ensure that the delicate aroma of the rose is not destroyed during the process resulting in the alluring rosewater. The knowledge and expertise of the perfume maker play a pivot role in determining the quality of rose water produced.
